Pianist

Howards first piano tutor was Harold Parker in Essex, and his musical mentorship was a huge influence on his becoming a musician. At the University of Manchester his piano studies continued with the British pianist Gordon Fergus-Thompson, and later with the very distinguished Russian pianist and international juror, Sulamita Aronovsky at the Royal Northern College of Music.

As a young pianist he won a place on the Yehudi Menuhin ‘Live Music Now’ Scheme to encourage performance opportunities for young artists at the start of their career. He has since performed extensively at many venues throughout the United Kingdom, including the Royal Albert Hall, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Bridgewater Hall. He has also appeared on concert platforms in Canada, at the Roy Thompson Hall, and in the USA, as well as in many European countries including Holland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France and Switzerland.

Howard continues to perform both solo and chamber music, having worked with artists such as the soprano, Faye Hart, formerly of English National Opera, and with the cellist, Chas Dickie. He has recently supported the young cellist Hannah McFarlane, accompanying her for ‘Young Musician of the Year’ auditions, and in concert at the ‘Two Moors Young Musician’s Platform’.

His accompaniment skills were very much a part of his educational role at the University of Salford, where he worked very closely with final year recital students, and giving mentoring support. He has often encouraged and prepared students who have taken part in performance competitions such as the ‘British Open Solo Competition’ and the ‘Radio BBC 2 Young Musician of the Year’.

In 2021 he accompanied the former LSO Principal Trombone, Dudley Bright, in the third of a Studio Recital Series recorded by World of Sound for WOB Play. The music included some classics of the Trombone repertoire as well as some well-known Salvation Army works. This was followed in 2022 by recording an album of Classic cornet solos with the soloist Iain Culross. Their recording, Volume 1 - Classic, music from the late Romantic Era of Trumpet and Cornet, can be found by following the link.
