Adjudicator & Examiner

Howard has worked as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music at all graded and diploma levels for over twenty years. He has travelled extensively throughout the UK as well as undertaking longer tours to such locations as Singapore, Macao, China, Poland, Portugal, Oman, and more recently to Tenerife.

He also has examination experience in the Higher Education sector both as an internal and external examiner. He has been a specialist external examiner for the Royal Northern College of Music, and has functioned in the role of external examiner at Ph.D level. He has undertaken examination work for Durham University, the University of West London, and the University of Huddersfield, at all postgradute levels.

Since his work in the Netherlands he has also been involved in brass band adjudication at all levels, including that of the Championship section. Assignments have been undertaken for entertainment contests, as well as at the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships, the North East Brass Band Championships, the Irish Brass and Wind Band Championships, the North West Brass Band Championships, the London & Southern Championships, as well as at the National Brass Band Finals. More recently he has adjudicated at the premier entertainment contest, Brass in Concert at The Sage 2022, and will return there in 2023. In 2023 he made his first visit to adjudicate at the North American Brass Band Championships, also returning there in 2024.

He also undertakes adjudication work at Music festivals and has recently enjoyed work at the Chichester Music Festival, the Weymouth Music Festival and the DASP Music ‘Young Musicians Festival’.
